SAVOY Savoy Records was founded in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky and Ozzie Cadena. In the early years the Newark, New Jersey based label issued mainly (bebop) jazz recordings. With the rise of rock&roll in the 1950s and the decline of bebop's popularity, Savoy switched their focus towards gospel music. Through its association with James Cleveland and his Gospel Music Workshop of America it became one of the leading forces in the world of gospel music. With the bulk of their releases in the 'seventies' Savoy's Gospel Album Discography certainly deserves a place at Just Moving On. One of the most intriguing things about Savoy are the album covers painted by the still unidentified person (or group of persons) named Harvey. There are about 200 album covers made by Harvey for Savoy and associated labels as Gospel, Sharp and Regent. For more on Harvey check Harveyalbums.com.
