In Billboard magazine of February 9 1959 there's a small article
mentioning that Proverb Records was formed a week before by Miltou Rose
(president and general manager), Brother Henderson (vice-president and
A&R), Paul Vandervoort II (vice-president and public relations). In
the same article there is also a reference to an upcoming album on
Proverb by the Clouds of Joy. So far we haven't been able to track down
this album and isn't in our
Proverb album discography.
Of the men
who started the Proverb label, Brother Henderson is the most interesting
as he was the man responsible for all the beautiful releases on Proverb
and from 1964 onward on its subsidiary
Gospel Corner. Henderson started
his career in the music world as R&B singer "Duke" Henderson who
turned to gospel music around 1955 and he became "Brother" Henderson. In
the second half of the fifties he became gospel DJ at KPOP in Los
Angeles which gave him the opportunity to promote his own productions.
In 1972 Henderson passed away and that meant also the end of both
Proverb and Gospel Corner. From the late sixties Proverb and Gospel
Corner were nationally distributed through Kent Records. After the
folding of Proverb and Gospel Corner several artists found a new label
in Kent Records.
