Ha-Lo records was the gospel imprint of George Leaner's One-derful
records based on South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. It had a short but
very sweet period of activity between 1963 and 1968 during which time
25 45's were issued. George Leaner's origins were in the South in
Mississippi and his group of labels aimed their sound at the southern
African-American diaspora. this meant favouring intense, impassionate,
southern style shouters that fronted a powerhouse backing of guitar,
bass, keyboards and drums. 45's by Quartets were the backbone of Ha-Lo
(or Halo as it was sometimes spelled). Groups like the Gospel
Ambassadors, the Golden Tones, the Daytonians and the Gospel Souls made
'star pick' recordings. The stars of the Ha-Lo label were undoubtedly
the Salem Travelers fronted by the velvet vocals of Chester Feemster and
Arthur Davis. They stayed hugely popular in Chicago long after their
departure from Ha-Lo moving on to record albums for Checker,
One-Way,
Peacock and
Nashboro.
