D-VINE SPIRITUALS
Memphis had probably more independent gospel record labels than any other city in the southern parts of the USA. Labels like Designer, Prophecy and Messenger all catered for the local market. Several artists recorded for more than one of the independent Memphis gospel labels. One of these independents was D-Vine Spirituals and its subsidiary JCR. We don't know much about D-Vine Spirituals and JCR. The majority of their productions was produced by Juan D Shipp and recorded at the Tempo Studios in Memphis. Juan D Shipp was according to Billboard Magazine a DJ at local radio station KWAM in the early 1970s. It's safe to assume that Juan D Shipp was owner of D-Vine Spirituals, JCR and the Tempo Studios at a period in the labels existence.
D-Vine Spirituals wasn't very punctual in sticking to one logical system of numbering their releases. D-Vine Spirituals also used a lot of different label logos and they didn't print the year of production on the labels either. Making a D-Vine Spirituals discography in some kind of chronological order is a nightmare. Listening to the 45s and with indications at which years some of the artists recorded for other labels we think that D-Vine Spirituals and JCR was in business between the late 1960s and the early 1980s, although the lower numbered JCR releases might have been recorded and released in the first half of the 1960s.
Our discography isn't complete so all additions and corrections are welcome and when you do know more about the labels please let us know.
We've tried to figure out a chronological order in the D-Vine Spirituals releases based on addresses printed on the labels and design of labels. It's a bit more than a wild guess.
